Moff Skellington at Canwood Gallery
The exhibition is open from 11am to 4pm from Tuesday to Sunday throughout May 2019
The multi-talented Yorkshire-based artist, Moff Skellington, will be exhibiting a large collection of his exceptional paintings at Canwood Gallery, at Checkley, Herefordshire, for the whole of May. Known for his performances and recording work, Moff is, and always has been, a painter. The man himself admits: “What I cannot do with paint, I do with language and sound and, of course, vice versa”
Moff’s images are at once familiar and strange, both in style and content. Here, everyday life is given a dreamlike intensity in which comedy and menace are present in equal measure. His style vacillates between sophisticated caricature and the crudely primitive. The images are sometimes rendered in the greys and blacks of 1940s film noir, or at other times in luxuriant full colour, but always an atmosphere that is distinctly ‘Moff’ pervades.
Although based in Leeds, Moff visits Herefordshire regularly to stay with members of his family in Fownhope. He is a keen fan of Canwood Gallery and says “I visited Canwood a couple of years ago with my Aunt and Uncle (whose idea it was to mount this exhibition) and fell in love with the place. It has a wonderful atmosphere, welcoming and magical, not at all daunting or precious like many fine art galleries can be.
Stephen Dale’s sheer joy in the art has a lot to do with that – you feel you are being invited to share in that joy. I feel very lucky to be showing my work here and hope can do the gallery and Bart’s proud!”
During most of the exhibition, Moff will be at Canwood Gallery, working on his latest paintings, being on hand to chat to visitors about his artwork, and having a brew.
The exhibition is open from 11am to 4pm from Tuesday to Sunday throughout May.
30 canvasses and 14 prints on show for the month of May. Moff will be available on site most days.
About Moff Skellington
Octoberness, Perfection and Slapstick. Octoberness is a complexity of emotions associated with the transition from summer into autumn, a sense of pending, of waiting for something to happen. Perfection is that unattainable state of flawlessness that every schoolboy knows does not exist. Slapstick, like gravity, is an inescapable force of nature. Through the good offices of Slapstick we are delivered from pomposity, conceit and misplaced sobriety.
Moff is a floater, a practitioner of Edoddi: Abstercot’s traditional blend of art pictures, word poems and music tunes. In Edoddi there are no rules except those of one’s own making; it is a free expression of one’s mind and one’s experience of life. When he’s not recording, or writing, Moff is painting. Or having a brew.
Education: 1995-1998. Bradford College, BA(Hons ) Art &Design Specialising in printmaking mainly etching

You exhibition lifted my spirits and it was so good to watch the video and share your journey. I live in Fownhope . Told Dorothy how good it was without having realising you are family. Also had a talk with your rock and sent you a card via her.
