Haugh Woods
The name Haugh, which is pronounced “Hoff” is derived from the name of a Saxon owner indicating that this is the site of an ancient wood. Haugh Woods, at nearly 350 hectares (850 acres), is nationally important for butterflies and moths, with over 600 species recorded within it. This makes the wood one of the top 10 woods in the country and is designated as a SSSI due to the presence of these invertebrates.

One of Britain’s finest half-day walks
FOWNHOPE AND THE WYE VALLEY
The walk: Moderate; 6½ miles; four hours. Hill and river walking.

Terrain: Open short-cropped grass with wooded footpaths and bridleways; generally undulating with one steep climb at start and level walking beside the Wye.
Directions: Start at Fownhope; past church, cross B-road to north side and proceed along lane opposite, taking first left through housing estate.
At Nover Wood Drive bear right up arrowed footpath, then where path dips, go over stile on left and head diagonally across small field to further stile. Follow path uphill through woods to reach crossing of tracks.
Turn right and continue uphill for 100 yards, then take left fork (Wye Valley Walk) and climb ridge of Common Hill. Descend from ridge, pass white house on left to reach junction of tracks. Take middle path (blue arrow) uphill, fork left in 220 yards, leaving WVW to follow bridleway, then track to metalled lane.
Turn right, then opposite Common Hill Farm, cross stile on left (WVW) and head downhill through meadow, round to stile leading into wood. Climb through wood for ¼ mile to crossing of paths, keep ahead to gate on woodland fringe. Maintain direction through rough pasture, past pond and through gate, then downhill beside hedge for 220 yards to gate and bear right on to stony track. Pass farm buildings (right), keep straight on through gate (mast in sight) and along track for 220 yards to where track curves left. Here, bear right past small pond towards Birds Farm Cottage and enter garden via gate.
Pass in front of cottage, turn right along its side, go through gate and walk along track for 150 yards to gate into pasture. Shortly, climb concealed stile in hedge on right and follow left side of field for ¼ mile to crossing of paths. Turn left (WVW), cross stream and head for stile in top of field (left of farmhouse) by walking left around edge. Cross stile, turn right along hedge, join stony track to reach main B-road.
Turn left for 100 yards then right down road to Capler Farm. Head towards farmhouse, then bear right through gated stockyard (farm left, barn right) and continue into meadow and then just over ½ mile to road.
Cross road and follow stream briefly southwest then track west half a mile to banks of the Wye. Walk along river for approximately 1¼ miles, reaching stile on edge of wood. Next section has suffered landslip and may be impassable. If conditions allow, follow path to reach house; otherwise do not cross stile but turn right alongside wood to top, then left through gate and along top edge of wood to rejoin path to Fownhope.
