Canwood Gallery opens today, with two large gallery spaces and 10 acres of sculpture park, in support of Bart’s Charity. Our opening exhibition is part of H.Art and includes:-
Carl Andre
Canwood Gallery is immensely proud to be exhibiting Isoclast 07, a 2004 edition of bricks by Carl Andre. Carl Andre’s Equivalent VIII better known as ‘the bricks’ caused massive public controversy during the 1970s when purchased and put on display by the Tate. Due to the publicity it has attracted it is perhaps one of the best known works of modern art in the Tate Collection.
Peter Sellers
Peter Sellers often credited as the greatest comedian of all time, also had a passion for photography.
On view are his images of Leigh Taylor-Young, Nanette Newman, HRH Princess Margaret
and Peter’s images from Vogue 1973 of Liza Minnelli. The exhibition of stunning images reveals a huge talent for photography, and gives a wonderful insight into Peter’s life and the 1960s and 70s.
Angela Conner
Angela Conner is one of Britain’s most proli c sculptors who, for over 40 years, has created Europe’s largest mobile sculptures as well as acclaimed portraits. Conner’s sculptures feature in public and private collections worldwide and she has exhibited at the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Royal Academy of the Arts in London and was awarded an American Institute of Architects’ Honor Award for sculpture and co-design of Heinz Plaza, Pittsburgh USA. At 35 metres, her Irish Wave in Dublin is the tallest mobile sculpture in Europe.
Walenty Pytel
Herefordshire’s most charismatic sculptor needs no introduction. With work on permanent display at the Houses of Parliament, Birmingham Airport and Hereford’s own iconic landmark the Bulmer’s Woodpecker, to name just a few, he is one of the World’s nest craftsmen.
Heather Jansch
Leading contemporary sculptor Heather Jansch has established worldwide critical acclaim for her life-size driftwood bronze horses.
In 2000 she exhibited in ‘The Shape of The Century’ – 100 years
of sculpture in Britain at Canary Wharf, alongside leading British sculptors, Moore, Frink, Hepworth, Caro et al. Jansch’s horses had achieved worldwide recognition and Tim Smit, KBE, bought one for The Eden Project, where it was voted the best loved exhibit becoming known simply as The Eden Horse.
Ed Elliott
One of Herefordshire’s most exciting new artists, Ed Elliott is de nitely one to watch.
Ed Elliott’s work predominantly comprises of large scale gurative sculpture, often carved from tree trunks. Ed has won national acclaim with a number of National Trust commissions, among which he created a striking wooden angel gure with a 14ft wingspan, exhibited at Mottisfont in Hampshire, and more recently his response to the military history of Hughenden Manor with his ‘Watchmen’ series.
Martin Carter
Martin Carter’s work is characterized by Abstract Expressionism and his work stems from a desire to create a similar experience to that which is obtainable through the power of music.
Rob Parkin
Wildlife artist Rob Parkin heads our traditional painting section with a stunning display of beautifully captured animals and birds. His artwork echoes our surroundings, highlighting the environment and the wildlife we are so lucky to enjoy.
Mark Houghton
Member of Royal British Society of Sculptors Mark Houghton’s arresting abstract sculptures and paintings quietly demand to occupy the contexts within which they are created for.
Jonathan Loxely
After working in the lm industry creating sculpture and landscapes for feature lms Jonathan Loxley moved into creating Marble sculpture with great success. His work features at Goodwood Sculpture Park and internationally in Hong Kong, California, New York and Cannes. Jonathan’s work can be regarded as a diary of self-investigation in the hope some conclusions may be recognised by others.
Dominic Welch
Dominic Welch followed a traditional but unexpected route into making sculpture. A speculative advert for an art-based apprenticeship led to working with Peter Randall-Page. Now an established sculptor in his own right Dominic has exhibited extensively in the UK, Australia, USA and the Far East.
Simon Meiklejohn
One of Herefordshire’s huge creative talents, Simon Meiklejohn is an artist to watch. Simon’s wind sculptures inspire a tranquillity that mesmerizes, while other ne art pieces gently demand contemplation. There are glimpses of beauty, touches of the genius mad inventor, and hints of playfulness which all combine to compel you to take a closer look.
Caro Burberry
Expressing reverence for the amazing world in which we live, by capturing poignant and beautiful moments, Caro Burberry MRBS, is another of Herefordshire’s and the UK’s leading sculptors exhibiting at Canwood Gallery.
Angela Holden
Exciting new Herefordshire artist Angela Holden, is starting to get great recognition with her bold use of neon. Angela uses the transformative and seductive qualities of paint to make bold, expressive paintings exploring concepts of boundary and journey.
Walter van Straaten
Walter Van Straaten is a Herefordshire based artist by adoption, who has always been attracted by the beauty of the country’s ancient woodlands. Looking for a way to bring out the beauty of the wood itself, he settled on the idea of blending it with a strongly contrasting material – polished stainless steel – so that each element draws something from the other. Two elements as one. Does it work? We would love your views on that.
Simon Probyn
Simon Probyn is another of Herefordshire’s great new talents. A sculptor who works using heavy industrial steel he creates abstract and gurative works of art from both found and new material. He takes the man-made architectural steel designs and lets them subtly dictate their new purpose.
Ben Esthop
Ben Esthop’s work focuses on creating natural simplicity and clarity of form, infused with hues of liquid light and colour. His work is in essence sculpture with the added element of purpose.
Will Carr
Will Carr is another of Herefordshire’s young sculptors to watch. Using steel Will recreates the intricacies of natural forms and phenomena’s. Texture allows him to make this very strong, rigid medium appear soft with elegance to mimic or accentuate its surroundings.
Deborah Roberts
Canwood Gallery presents a rare opportunity to see original paintings by Deborah Roberts, of the stars of global opera, each one individually signed, featuring Andrea Bocelli, Jonas Kaufmann, Paoletta Marrocu and Steven Mercurio.
